KAF Paintball

KAF Paintball is a popular activity involving the free first-person shooter Digital Paintball 2 game. The games first lasted between August 2006 until the end of September 2006. Since then, the game is played for periods of various length.

Because of its low system requirements and small download size, the game could be played by a large number of people using older systems. Its small demands and its fun gameplay only popularized it, especially because it was a free game. Keiichi Anime Forever has hosted a password-protected members-only Digital Paint 2 server several times in the past. A large number of members came to play, following an advertisement for the game in the forum's header and word of mouth between players.

The Original Run

KAF Paintball started because several people in A/V chat, namely sk89q, Tater_Salad, Drifter, CypressDahlia, and Sky Furaitto, were looking for a fun multiplayer game to play. They had exhausted about every free and good online game, and sk89q suggested Digital Paintball 2. Although the others were hesitant to try at first, they were hooked when they were finally persuaded to get it. At first, the server was hosted off a user's computer, but it was installed and run 24/7 on Keiichi Anime Forever's secondary server. Advertisements by word of the mouth and on the forum garnered a larger player base.

The server played a large number of maps that were downloaded from other servers and the Digital Paint 2 official website. At least one hundred maps were rotated through randomly, though some maps were particularly favored. A few custom Keiichi Anime Forever-only maps were also run many times. Usually, map rotations were limited to a small list in the map list of the server, unless there was a server administrator present to manually change to new and different maps. Because of faulty ''wget'' usage, a few maps with external content were not downloaded completely and they lacked textures or sounds during gameplay.

There was variety in the people who came to play, but a number of individuals were found online more often. Drifter, sk89q, CypressDahlia, Sky Furaitto, Tater_Salad, MastrJ, and others were playing the most. Most of the people who played at least once, such as Rasengandragon and Asami, only logged in a handful of times. Most people who did play were not very good at the game, but as most of the players were poor anyway, there were very little problems about skill levels. A number of individuals such as Sky Furaitto and especially Sheepy had very good reflex and aim.

A problem arised about campers in the game. Many of the players found that camping in the game destroyed the experience and the fun and the community was split over the issue. The actual administration of the server did not favor camping though. A number of players continued to do it, mostly include new players.

Unfortunately near the end of September 2006, the secondary server had to be done away to keep costs down. There were no other servers to host the Paintball server, and the main server was incompatible with the Paintball software. The game had to go away, also because a new school year was starting. Member Man on a Mission tried to run his own server occasionally for a few weeks, but the lack of players did not warrant his effort. Paintball was completely gone by the end of November 2006.

The Server

Primarily, sk89q managed most of the server. He kept it running, configured the server, downloaded maps, and advertised it. Paintball was run on a FreeBSD system hosted in Texas. Several individuals were given server administration access via basic privileges on the server and restricted web-based RCON access. Go Go Guncon Fighter, Tater_Salad, among other people were given such powers.

Play in 2007

Both a private and public server for Paintball was run for most of 2007. The private server was for KAF members only, but it was rarely used by the last half of 2007. Occasionally, members consisting usually only a handful of people, did come to play on the public server. Unfortunately, because cheap bandwidth was being used, latency was especially bad for some who did not live near Los Angeles. The servers were not started up again starting a month or two into 2008.

Custom Maps

Four custom maps for Keiichi Anime Forever were created. sk89q created KAF Bishie Burger and KAF Mall while Xanei created The Office. Both of sk89q's maps were played repeatedly on the server, but Xanei's map was not completed in time before the server had to be shutdown. The maps were created in the BSP map editing program.

KAF Bishie Burger

Bishie Burger is a virtual burger chain owned by the member Jayu Makusho, and the map was modeled after one of these chain stores. The official name of the map was Death at Bishie Burgers No. 31, and up to version five was finished. Outside the window panes of the restaurant, one could see a Raisurinu's Adult Videos store with a poster of Drifter the pornstar, XXX. Inside the front of the restaurant was a setup of several tables and a front ordering table. To the right, upon entrance, were the restrooms. Behind the desk was the kitchen, and to the left was the manager's office. Far behind to the left was the two level storeroom, and to the right of that was another kitchen. Underneath the restaurant and connected by the sinks in the restaurant was a sewer system. One could enter Raisurinu's store from the sewers. There was additionally an air-duct system reachable by the first kitchen, the bathroom, and the sewers. A star viewing room was available in that system.

KAF Mall

KAF Mall was, supposedly, the Keiichi Anime Forever mall. The mall hosted a MastrJ's Hot Churros ("Get them fresh") stand, an Ifo's Fine Asian Dining restaurant, a Drifter's Pantyhose store, an Asami's Macademia Anime Store, a mall movie theatre showing Tantalizing Humor, "featuring the acts of Rasen and Tantal," an ice skating rink, a SK's Tech store, a MastrJ's Toys store, a DW's Fun-in-Bed Pets store, and Tater's Paintball and Paintball Accessories store. Additionally, there was a hidden Amatsu's Pron Shop. Several of the mall's shops, the stage, the elevator, and the underground power generation facility were linked via the mall's airduct and tunnel systems.

The mall had a large number of interactive activities in the map. The toy store had a small piano, a moving toy train, and moving blocks. The stage could play Caramelldansen. SK's tech store could play music by The Pillows. The elevator was functional. There were moving cats toggled by a switch in DW's store. There was a secret com system that said "Welcome to KAF Mall: where the fun is always family safe" (said by Drifter). And lastly, there was a secret adventure ride.

Revision six of the map was originally going to have a parking structure and administration offices, but Quake 2 engine limits were reached and the changes had to be deleted. Revision six instead only added the com system.

Rendering the maps became an issue because of their size. Lighting the entire maps became such chores that took over ten minutes to finish.

Sanc's Gay Bathhouse

This map was created in the 2007 run of the game by sk89q. It was a bathhouse with several rooms that was naked after Shattered Sanctuary the member. It addition, it also had a reference to Dr. Ifter in a sign for a closed establishment in the bathhouse.
