Fanclubs were created by sk89q in order to provide a way for members to manage their own group while discussing their favorite anime series. In addition, by allowing users to create and moderate their own fanclubs, Keiichi Anime Forever did not need to maintain and moderate a large number of forums for as many anime series as possible, which it had been doing for a while. Originally, fanclubs were mostly maintained by rasengandragon and Raisurinu.
Fanclubs were owned by one individual and moderated by a group of owner-selected individuals. The moderators and owner got powers to moderate the club forum(s). Activities and events could be hosted solely by the club and Keiichi Anime Forever did not usually have to take any part in it.
There was a very complicated process for creating a fanclub, and it was required to read a long document regarding fanclub creation. Many failed to read completely, and skim and were completely lost. Some incorrectly filled out the form.
When a club was created, it must have had gathered sufficient support from a minimum number of members. There was no restrictions on who could create a fanclub, however.
Originally, fanclubs were allowed to customize the CSS styles of their fanclubs, but the option became unavailable with the onset of the second forum skin.
Changing the header HTML was still allowed, however. Changing the description of the fanclub was also allowed.
On 11 April, 2008, sk89q decided to remove all the fanclubs because they had become very inactive. In addition, for those who were left still posting, it reduced activity from the main anime discussion forums. To continue the spirit of fanclubs, "fanlistings" were introduced. The fanclub forums were finally deleted by the middle of May 2008.
