As a short fad in early September 2005, members created approval and disapproval images that (usually) depicted a character with either disapproval or approval text superimposed. For example, an "approval image" could feature a character from an anime series with the text "I approve!" placed over him or her.

The first individuals to create the approval and disapproval images were Mina-chan and sk89q, and later to be followed by guinea812 and Raisurinu. Whether it was Mina-chan or sk89q that started it first was of debate, but it was mutually agreed that neither got the idea from each other. The fourth set of images were made by Erinyes. The thread named A Gallery of "(Un)Approved" Images was created to celebrate the fad, and many members contributed their own images. As the thread started growing too quickly, it was closed and archived.
